Geoffrey Paulin, Senior Economist Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE) program

He has written numerous articles using various aspects of the CE data, including those related to hospitality and tourism. His most recent, entitled "Meal Appeal: Patterns Of Expenditures On Food Away From Home," appears in the April 2020 edition of the BLS Spotlight on Statistics series. His articles in the Monthly Labor Review include: "Travel expenditures, 2005-2013: domestic and international patterns in recession and recovery," "Travel expenditures, 2005-2011: spending slows during recent recession;" "Let's do lunch: expenditures on meals away from home;" and "Consumer expenditures for alcohol in 2000." He also co-authored a poster that was presented at the 2021 I-CHRIE conference, examining how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic affected travel expenditures by region of the U.S., which he and his co-author plan to develop into an article for publication.
Dr. Paulin frequently organizes sessions for economic and other conferences at which he speaks, featuring work from the CE program and the BLS generally. This includes the I-CHRIE conference, at which he has presented several times since 2006. In addition to presenting results of his research, he also leads workshops to provide training in use of CE tabular and microdata, and in the writing process: from formulating an idea to publishing the findings.
Gustav Pieterse Hotel Manager The Saxon Hotel South Africa

Born and raised in the Free State, South Africa, in the city of Bloemfontein, Gustav attended school at Grey College from grade 1 to 12. Gustav attended the Hotel School at the Central University of Technology from 2011-2014. During Gustav’s studies (2012 and 2013) he did 6-month internships at the Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa, in Johannesburg and the Elangeni and Maharani in Durban, South Africa, respectively. Thereafter Gustav furthered his studies in 2014 and completed his Bachelor of Technology in Hospitality Management.
Gustav started his career at the Saxon Hotel, as the Banqueting Manager in January 2015, at the age of 24. Within 2 years and 2 months, Gustav quickly grew through the ranks, where he held the positions of Food and Beverage Duty Manager, Assistant Food and Beverage Manager and ultimately Food and Beverage Manager.
Thereafter, in May 2017, Gustav found himself in Washington DC, at the Hay-Adams Hotel, as Food and Beverage Assistant Manager. After 4 months of being at the property, Gustav won the accolade of “Manager of the quarter”, and 5 months after that, managed to scoop up the award for the “Manager of the year” for the hotel.
In May 2018, Gustav returned to South Africa and re-joined the Saxon, as Operations Manager. In December 2020, Gustav was given the opportunity to take up the role of Hotel Manager for the Saxon hotel.
Steve Hood Senior Vice President Research for STR.

Steve is Senior Vice President of Research for STR. He has been with STR for 25 years and was involved in the original development of the STAR program utilized by nearly 70,000 hotels and almost all hotel companies around the world. Steve is the Founding Director of the SHARE Center, STR’s program to support hospitality and tourism education with over 1,000 schools involved from 80 different countries. The STR SHARE Center provides hospitality and tourism data for research and for use in the classroom as well as related resources including student certifications, training programs, and student competitions. Steve serves on advisory boards and as an honorary professor for leading schools, including Cornell, Penn State, Virginia Tech, University of Delaware, Colorado State, Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne and Hong Kong Poly. Steve has been recognized with the ICHRIE Industry Recognition Award, the EuroCHRIE Nestle Pro Gastronomia Award and by the Hotel Schools of Distinction for his commitment to hospitality and tourism education.

Topic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Wanted – Information Leading to Teaching Case Study Publications This session will provide a high level round up of information in teaching case study publication for those wanting to blaze trails to enhance the teaching and research portfolios as travel and tourism educators. Dr. Po-Ju Chen. United States Fulbright Scholar, is the Hospitality and Tourism Administration department chair and the Michael P. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Business at the North Carolina Central University. Dr. Chen is also the co-editor of the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Cases (JHTC). Dr. Chen specializes in marketing research including consumer behavior, tourist behaviors, retail and shopping behaviors. Her secondary research focuses on entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability and cross-cultural research. Dr. Chen has published several articles in leading marketing and hospitality/tourism academic research journals. Her research has received recognition and numerous awards including the 2017-2021 Shanghai Overseas Scholar (China), 2018 Jewish National Fund Fellow (USA-Israel), 2015 Distinguished Chair Professor Award (Austria), 2012 Research Excellence Award (USA), and 2009 Literati Network Award for Excellence - Highly Commended Award (UK).In addition to her research accomplishments, Dr. Chen has over 20 years of teaching experience. Professor Chen has taught courses in marketing, MBA case studies, entrepreneurship and strategic management, innovation, leadership, human resources management, leadership and strategic management, event management, research methodology, tourism management and tourism geography. Dr. Chen has also received awards for teaching, including 2012 and 2015 Teaching/Research Awards and a 2012 John Wiley & Sons Award for Innovation in Teaching. Dr. Chen was also a UCF-Walt Disney World program instructor for Guest Services Management and Leadership and Strategic Management.Professor Chen in industry partnerships and community outreach. She served as the 2018 Hainan Tourism and Business Seminar Scholar, 2016-2018 Florida Green Lodging Education liaison, 2015 Professional Business Women Association, 2010 President of the Florida/Caribbean Chapter of Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators (FL-Caribbean CHRIE). Dr. Chen was also the primary data analyst for the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Body of Knowledge (2014-2016).
